WalesOnline - News - South Wales Valleys - Pontypridd & Llantrisant - ‘They’re going to ruin us with the pedestrianisation’

Car-Free Memphis fully supports the development of car-free zones, neighborhoods, and/or livable streets. But, it would be unfair not to address that there are other people, whose arguments state that in some of these zones business has fallen by 30%. In which case, these zones are so huge that one can hardly walk across these zones with a heavy load of shopping bags in a timely manner without assistance from a bike or hand chart. Moreover, these zones are not just car-free, they are wheel-free zones: no carts, buggies, bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, ect allowed at all. This does appear to be over kill, whereby shops line the borders of these huge zones, while leaving one huge circle of empty space in the center. Well, in that case, I somewhat agree with their side of this argument. In fact, a design with condensed streets would be far better. These streets should be from 5 to 50 feet wide with two adequate sidewalks on either side or a completely flat surface. These zones can be fully supported by solar and wind power, along with grid power whenever necessary. Only electric vehicles should be allowed to ride through these communities after a certain time frame, while gas vehicles are allowed in for deliveries between 9 PM and 9 AM in the morning. Between 9AM and 9 PM, only walkers, human powered vehicles, and electric vehicles are allowed. This proposal that I am making here truly comes from a well balanced approach applied by those who want to avoid any extremist car-free models with one-way-to-do-it-only arguments. The following link provides you with adequate support concerning the matter at hand, that car-free zones that are to big hardly works for many business owners.
